How These Apps Work
The process begins there in space, with satellites that orbit around the Earth. These satellites have very powerful cameras that are capable of taking photos of practically the entire planet.
Periodically, these satellites make a kind of “photo” of the Earth’s surface. They capture images of all types of places, from large cities to isolated forests and deserts.
These photos are then sent back to Earth. This happens through a process called data transmission. Basically, it's as if satellites are sending a big email full of photos to a computer here on Earth.
After these images are received on Earth, they go through a process of “cleaning” and organization. This means that images are adjusted so that they look crisp and clear, and then they are organized in a way that makes sense. For example, all images of a certain city are grouped together.
Finally, these images are made available in an application. When you open the app on your smartphone or computer and search for a location, the app searches the image of that location in your large image “archive” and displays it for you.
